Applications/Use

Residential – Homes, condos and multifamily units

Commercial -  Restaurants, cafeterias, hotels, fitness centers/gyms, dorms, correctional facilities, Laundromats, laundry plants, military barracks and any other facility using large quantities of hot water.

Engineering

Residential  - Engineering is generally not required unless larger than normal volumes of water are involved.

Commercial - Commercial uses have not only greater efficiencies and may require additional design  depending on the application/use. Some designs require multiple units of different sizes and interim storage tanks, pumps and controls to capture waste energy from batch generated hot wastewater like with dishwashing and laundry applications.

How It Works

Residential - While using the shower the warm wastewater from the shower flows through the inner pipe of the Thermodrain while cold water (to replace the hot water being drawn from the hot water tank)  is drawn through the outer pipe of the Thermodrain at the bottom of the unit and exits through the top 20 – 30F warmer before entering the hot water tank as preheated water.  Preheating your hot water by 30F provides approximately 40% of the heating that your water needs to be warm enough for showers/baths.

Commercial - Units function the same way as residential units except that they are sized ( 3 – 6” diameter pipes up to 100” in length) to handle much higher volumes of water, can be installed in parallel( multi-family units) or in conjunction with interim storage tanks to capture waste heat from baths/hot tubs ( and during swimming pool refresh), high volume washing machines  and commercial dishwashers.

How Much Energy Will It Save

Residential units can capture up to 50% of the shower hot water used in a home, approximately  1,000 to 1,500 kWh in energy savings – roughly equivalent to 50%+ of what a solar hot water system can provide at a fraction of the cost. Payback can be as little as 2-3 years for electric and 4+ years for natural gas customers.

Commercial units can recover upwards of 68% of the waste heat flowing through the exchanger and payback in some applications like high volume high temperature restaurant/cafeteria operations can be measured in the months Vs years.

Incentives

Tax credits and rebates are available in a number of states and utility service districts.

Oregon  -   $80 to $120 Tax Credit - View Oregon Incentives/Tax Credits Info

Washington  -   $250 rebate for residential retrofits, new home and commercial rebates/grants under review.  View Washington Incentives/Tax Credit Info

Modeling

Residential - The TD-340 will meet the needs of the average home, where multiple showers are ongoing at the same time  would like need a Model 2360B.

Commercial - The ECO Calculator  ( download an Excel Spreadsheet) can assist in developing a design and sizing for multi-shower applications in homes, multifamily units and hotels/motels. To capture hot wastewater generated by dishwashing, laundry and other applications will require a design specific to your facility. Please call or email us to discuss your unique needs.

Net Zero (Approaching)

This technology, by recovering heat that was previously considered waste heat and was lost down the drain can, can reduce considerably reduce hot water heating needs and get your home or building closer to net zero energy use at a cost lower than any other technology.

How It Works – GFX Technology

Products

Residential - Thermodrain TD-340 primarily but Models 2360B and others may be required for larger homes with more simultaneously running showers.

Commercial - ECO-GFX  in 3, 4” and 6” diameter pipes in lengths from 40” to 120”  - see Commercial Calculator for details on models available.

Site Viability

There must be access to the wastewater sewer or septic pipes with a vertical drop of the pipe length plus approximately 8”, residential unit TD-340 would require a 48” vertical drop.

Sizing

Residential - Standard 3 bedroom running 1 shower at a time – TD-340

Larger 3+ bedroom homes with 2+ showers at a time then multiple TD-340’s or amodel 2360B or larger.

Commercial - ECO GFX in single or multiple units in parallel depending on the application, temperature, volume of hot water used, GPM/flow rate. See the Commercial Calculator for more details, call or email.
